The Underground Feud

Before I begin, I want to give credit where credit is due. This is very clever: http://pointplankn.com/

There has been a lot of backlash against Tom Keegan of the Lawrence Journal-World today about his column “It’s time to call a truce.”

I had a phone interview with a former football player, who wishes to remain anonymous due to personal reasons which do not need to be discussed.

A disclaimer… While this may be completely factual, some of his information is through other sources.  The interesting things he revealed deal with that this has been going on for a while, and that fights between football and basketball happen at other colleges.

However, my source also talked to the Kansas City Star.  Self also talked to the Journal-World on Wednesday night.

On what led to the three separate altercations, specifically what happened Tuesday at 6:30 pm:
Basically, it started with a female. This dates back to last semester.  I don’t know who exactly the female was dating.  She was dating one of the football players and one of the basketball players started fooling around with her. This all leads back to an incident that happened at The Hawk last semester. There was a feud brewing then and it’s kinda calmed down since then. And I guess this woman escalated it to this point now.

What happened to Tyshawn? He said on facebook he dislocated his finger in a punch.
I heard he swung at somebody and something happened where he fell down and [that is when he] dislocated [his thumb].

What happened in the incident last semester?:
One of the basketball players got into it with one of the football players at The Hawk.  All of this has been personally documented because Mangino has been banned the football players from The Hawk because of this incident.  There was an incident that happened there and it continued to the Towers parking lot. It got real hectic there and it got broken up by Sherron [Collins] and one of the football players. That was last semester.   That’s what it all started from.

Has there been other situations like this?:

It’s been an ongoing feud. It dates back to when I got here in (year redacted to protect his identity). In 2005, there was a feud between Keith Langford and the football players and Aaron Miles and the football players.  There’s always been a feud between the two. I can even say at other colleges, it’s the same way.  It’s an ego thing, basically.

On whether there will be other fights:
[It’s] probably not [going to continue] because Lew Perkins and the coaches are involved.  This is already on ESPN.  From what I hear, they’re embarrassed because it represents the kind of characters they are.

Right now, I’m going to say this is it. But honestly…this won’t be [the last incident between football and basketball]. It will probably die down and it will come back up. Maybe it won’t happen between these players but it will come back in the future.
