“Twin-sanity” in Phoenix
Josh Billings once wrote, “There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared: twins.”
This has been the case for opponents of the Phoenix Suns in the last couple of games, as Markieff and Marcus Morris have exploded with two dominant performances. Both Morrii slimmed down over the summer and their conditioning is starting to pay off just a few games into the 2013-2014 season. Now, before I go in to more detail about the Morris twins, below I listed the averages (from the last two games) of both of them, alongside some of the other top big-men in the NBA.
Now obviously Marcus has not had quite the statistical impact of his older brother, but both men have looked impressive for the Suns this season. One thing to note is the three-point percentage of the Morris Twins, or rather, the lack of a statistic for the other big men. One thing that makes the Morrii so valuable is their ability to knock down shots from behind the arc. Marcus Morris has been a man on a mission since joining his brother in Phoenix, and you can expect his three-point shooting to continue to be a factor in how the Suns play this season.
Now while Marcus Morris might be more of a shooting threat, evident by his performance this year (and who could forget his game winner in the NBA Summer League. If you did forget it, check it out below), his brother has absolutely shined these last couple of games. Markieff Morris was suspended for the first game of the season for elbowing Serge Ibaka, but since coming back, he has been a force. Markieff Morris is putting up numbers that that the Suns’ didn’t expect in the slightest. In fact, with the impressive return and preseason performance of Channing Frye, many questioned whether it might be time to trade the older Morris. But that is no longer the case.
Markieff Morris has been putting up numbers comparable to the all-star and hall-of-fame caliber big-men in the league, and it will be exciting to see if he can keep it up over time. Obviously two games is a small sample size, but with Markieff Morris, and really both Morrii, finding their way early in their young careers, the possibilities are limitless. I fully expect the twins to average a combined total twenty-five points, fifteen rebounds, and three-to-four assists the rest of the season, and for fans of the Jayhawks, this Suns team will certainly be one to watch. I do, however, want to leave you with an interesting statistic…
This year Markieff Morris has a plus/minus of +22. LeBron James has a season plus/minus of +15. Kevin Durant has a plus/minus of -8. Now obviously I am in now way implying that Markieff Morris is actually better than the best two players in the NBA, but I do want to say this: Markieff Morris affects the game in many different ways, and his stock is constantly growing as he continues to put in solid performances one-after-another.
