It is no secret that the Kansas Jayhawks looked pretty terrible for five out the six halves of basketball played in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament this week. The same team that was coming off a convincing performance at home against Towson and that put the Duke Blue Devils in their place in the Champions Classic looked slow, young and disinterested during most of the tournament. The Jayhawks have certainly regressed last week.
All is not lost though. This escapade in the islands should serve as powerful teaching material for Self and company moving into a much needed week off. I would not want to be in the practices the team is about to endure. Bill Self can handle missed shots or errors that come from trying hard. What he will not tolerate is the kind of lackadaisical play his team displayed this week. Teams that were far inferior were allowed to hang around and simply acted like they wanted the win more. It showed on the court.
Let’s be honest: UTEP had absolutely no business being in the game with Kansas. This is a team that was so inferior from a talent standpoint that their head coach started the game trying to run the clock with a four-corners offense and gimmicky zone defenses. The Jayhawks relinquished a 14 point lead on the back of bone-headed plays down the stretch. S
elf’s squad does not play another true home game for weeks. They have to head to Colorado and Florida before coming to the Sprint Center to take on a talented New Mexico team. When they do finally get a home game on December 21st, they take on a very good Georgetown squad. In fact, with the exception of Villanova Iwhich could be a top 15 team before the end of the season in my opinion), every team the Jayhawks face before Christmas is superior to the competition they faced in the Bahamas. Thank goodness for this week off, because if some of these issues are not sorted out soon, it might be a long road to Big 12 play.
I am not overly enthusiastic about picking players of the game from any of the contests in the Bahamas, but here goes:
1. Wake Forest: Andrew Wiggins. Despite a mediocre shooting night, Wiggins was the team’s leading scorer and played solid defense.
2. Villanova: Frank Mason. Was a beast to handle when he drove to bucket. Had the go ahead 3-pt play that should have won the game for his team. Absolutely fearless.
3. UTEP: Perry Ellis. This was a tougher decision. I will make the argument that Perry was the best player against UTEP posting 19 pts off 50 percent shooting and snatching 7 rebounds. On the other hand, Selden was the man in the first half and had his best game as a Jayhawk. It was nice to see him break out a little bit, but his six turnovers cost him this time.
