Jack Harry denies use of homophobic slur to describe the Jayhawks

Jack Harry, who is an open Mizzou fan, referred to the Kansas Jayhawks as the “Gayhawks” on 41 Action News during their Sunday night broadcast.

Harry denied the claims in a YouTube video, as well as the December 9th 10 pm news broadcast.

“During our 10 p.m. sports report last night, I was having a discussion with Frank Boal,” Harry said in his YouTube video. “We were talking about the Kansas Jayhawks, and somehow, someway, I don’t know what happened, but it got out on social media today that I used a derogatory term in talking about the Kansas Jayhawks.

“Believe me folks, that’s not what I’m all about. I’ve had my go-rounds with Jayhawk fans, but I would never say what I’m accused of. I felt compelled to get that out today.”

41 Action News responded on their Facebook page as well as on Twitter:

“While Jack Harry is opinionated, he knows the difference between legitimate sports discussion and unacceptable, uncalled for language. After speaking at length with Jack, we believe Jack when he tells us that is not what he said.

We stand by Jack and encourage him to speak his mind when it comes to sports in Kansas City and beyond.”

I am sorry but he can deny it all he wants but he said gayhawks. That is not how someone that is paid to do a sports reporting job should conduct themselves on air. It just shows a sad state of professionalism

  • Paul

He didn’t say “gayhawks”. It doesn’t matter though. He’s a Tiger fan so no need to play fair with him.

  • Nick

I’m sorry, but there’s no denying that he said what he’s being accused of saying. In response to 41 Action News’ response – he can deny and claim that’s not what he said, and it’s probably a fact that that’s not what he MEANT to say – but he said it. It’s a perfect example of a Freudian Slip – he uses the term so much off camera that it’s in his sub conscious and he accidentally used a homophobic slur on camera.

It’s a shame that he said it but it’s even more of a shame if he doesn’t get fired.

Yea, Frank Boal looked shocked when he said it.

Wait, no he didn’t. Because Jack Harry never said it.

Or maybe Frank is in on this evil stunt too.

He’s heard Jack say it so often, off camera of course, away from any witnesses, that he just let it go.

    Let’s fire both those clowns.

The J and the G sounds are made in different places in the mouth. The J is palatal and the g is velar. Try to say them. There is a difference between the sounds. It sounds to me like jack said a G in that clip…. “hawks, gay hawks”

  • Josh

    Everyone stop crying. It’s hilarious!

  • Todd O.

    Homophobic slur? How so?

  • Sven Hock

Jack Harry will read everything that is writen on teleprompter …

  • Jim

This is so awesome. He could have said “PlayHawks” and you stupid beakers would have gotten your panties in a twist.

I think Jack is the best local sports caster in KC.

Really too bad KU fans are so thin skinned.
