Quick Hitters: Toledo
The Jayhawks were never really threatened by the Rockets from Toledo, but they didn’t exactly handle them either. This game was somewhere in-between. A win is a win, though, and the Jayhawks moved to 9-3 on the year after knocking off the then undefeated Rockets 93-83 in Allen Fieldhouse. Here are your quick hitters from the game.
The defense still needs work. Maybe there was a little Christmas ham hangover at play, but the Jayhawks’ defense that looked vastly improved in their previous two outtings took a step backwards against Toledo. Toledo’s 83 points is the most given up to a non-conference foe at home since Siena scored 84 way back in 2009. Once again, the Jayhawks gave up a huge offensive field goal percentage to their opponent. While Toledo is a good shooting team, making 50% of their field goals on the season, and KU held them to 46.4%, which is obviously below that average, KU certainly can’t feel good about that. The Jayhawks are still averaging a 41% defensive field goal percentage on the season. To put that into perspective, last year’s squad finished the season with a 36.1% mark, good for first in the nation. That team couldn’t score like this one can, so the defesive efficiency was more necessary. But can you imagine what this team could be like if they guarded that way? The offensive firepower was on display. It is going to be a good day when your three of your most potent offensive weapons go for over 20 points. That was the case against Toledo as Ellis, Wiggins and Tharpe poured in buckets. They were also very efficient, with Wiggins’ 50 percent from the field the lowest of the three by far.
A tale of two Tharpes. Tharpe looked awful for the first 4 minutes of this one. Throwing the ball away, putting his teamates in bad positions and playing poorly on the defensive end. He was proptly yanked. After a little butt-chewing from Coach Self he was re-inserted and never looked backed. He finished on fire, shooting a career high 20 points on 7-for-8 from the field. He also added eight assists to go with five turnovers on the night.
What to Watch for Recap:
#282. That was Toledo’s strenght of schedule ranking coming into their game in Allen Fieldhouse. They were also one of a handful of undefeated teams remaining. We were interested to see how this unproven squad would fare. So how good are they? I think the answer is about what we expected it to be. They are a solid offensive team that can’t guard well at all. They are good enough to win a lot of games this year, but probably not quite as good as their undefeated record might have suggested. Still, 12-1 with your only loss coming in Allen isn’t all that bad for them going forward.
How many points can the Jayhawks score? KU fell short of the century mark by 7, but still posted their second highest point total of the season agaisnt a suspect Toledo defense.
Black to Black? With others on the team lioghting it up offensively, Black didnt get an opportunity to play much against the Rockets. Even so, he had another solid game while he was in. He finished with 4 points on 50% shooting in 7 minutes. He only had one foul and added 3 offensive rebounds.
Beware of the Blog’s Player of the Game
Perry Ellis seems to have recovered just fine after getting knocked on the noggin against Georgetown. He was truly dominant inside against Toledo. He finished the game with an impressive stat line dropping 21 points on 60% shooting with one 3-pointer, 11 boards, an assist and a steal with zero turnovers. Not bad for the star sophomore out of Wichita.
