What to Watch for: Oklahoma State (Round Two)

This is the game that many picked out as the most important on the Jayhawk’s schedule before the season.

And why not? Oklahoma State was a close second, if not the favorite, to win the Big 12 and this late-season matchup had impact game written all over it. But that is why we play.

Little did we know that KU would have clinched at least a share of their 10th straight conference title with a full three games remaining on the slate, including this matchup in Stillwater. Who would have known that Marcus Smart would go bananas midway through league play and that his season would be marred by temper tantrums and flopping festivals? Who could have imagined that this OSU team would lose eight-of-nine games in conference play including seven straight before “righting the ship” against the two bottom-feeders of the league? Oklahoma State sits squarely out of the picture, tied for seventh in the Big 12 with Baylor.

But that doesn’t mean this game is not important. With a win, KU can:

  1. Guarantee an outright championship
  2. Stay in the hunt for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament
  3. Get back at an Oklahoma State team that beat them at home a season ago which was capped off by the infamous Marcus Smart backflip at mid-court on the Jayhawk.

Here are some things to watch for and my prediction for the game:

1. Who can stop Forte? In the first meeting between these two rivals, Phil Forte went off in the first half. He finished the game with 23 points off of seven 3-pointers on 10 attempts. I believe that if Oklahoma State is to have a chance to win this one, Forte will have to hit more than his fair share again. Which begs the question, who will stop him from doing just that? The Cowboys are an undersized team to begin with, which puts Perry and Joel on some faster, smaller guys for most of the contest. Otherwise, I would just say put Wiggins and/or Selden on him the whole game and try to make it miserable. I don’t think KU can do that, and it will be Tharpe and Mason with the brunt of the load unless things get out of hand. The key is to stay locked in on him, go over screens, arrive with the ball and with a hand in his face and, most importantly, DO NOT HELP OFF OF HIM PERIOD. Whoever guards him needs to forget the rest of the defense exists altogether.

2. Defensive rebounding. Oklahoma State is average, at best, at rebounding the basketball. That said, they actually rebounded the ball more efficiently on offense than did KU in the first matchup. KU has so much size on these Cowboys that it is inexcusable. Some of that may have been due to the fact that OSU jacked up nearly 30 threes and missed 16 of them leaving plenty of long rebound opportunities. Still, KU can’t afford to give this desperate team second chances. KU will out-rebound OSU on Saturday, but they need to limit their offensive boards to have the best chance to win.

3. Backflip? So, Marcus Smart came into Allen and did a backflip on the Jayhawk. I hated that. National guys played it off as reflecting a guy’s passion and emotion at the end of a big road win. I don’t buy it. It was flat out disrespectful from a guy who has proven this season to have little to no class on a basketball floor (or in its immediate vicinity). With the flopping and the chair kicking and the fan shoving following up his big-mouth offseason, this is not a college basketball player that I pretend to respect. My question is this: will KU do a flip on the court when they win tomorrow night? I think the short answer is no, they will not. It’s a pride thing. It’s something a blue blood school doesn’t do. You don’t celebrate like that when you are supposed to win the game. It would be similar to storming the court at home. Except for this time it’s different. It’s personal. And I, for one, hope it happens. Frank Mason seems like he is the guy to do it from his Late Night performance and I hope he marches right out there and flips all over the place. Just wishful thinking…

Prediction: This is KU’s toughest regular season game remaining. OSU has their main guy back from suspension and they are desperate for wins at this point. Winning on the road in Stillwater is never easy, especially with this little rivalry that has been brewing between these schools of late. I am going to take KU in a VERY close one. Final score: 80-77.
