Jayhawks in the NBA: Final week of the season
Now that college basketball is over, it’s time to focus in on the NBA to get our basketball fix. We’re a week away from the regular season ending and that means that for some teams, they’re resting starters and/or playing reserves more. And because of this, quite a few Jayhawks are getting increased playing time. I figured I’d let KU fans know about some upcoming games that could feature Jayhawks in them before the season is over. 1) New Orleans Pelicans vs. Oklahoma City Thunder – two games
These two teams match up twice in the final week and it features two Jayhawks in Jeff Withey and Nick Collison. Last night, Withey played 24 minutes in a losing effort for the Pelicans. He scored a career-high 17 points, had three assists, one block and three rebounds. Withey got a lot of minutes because Anthony Davis is having back spasms.
If OKC can lock up their No. 2 spot, I’d expect to see Collison get more minutes than normal. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Davis is shut down for the year and Withey continues to get more minutes.
Withey also ended up in the middle of an interesting play during last night’s game…
2) Miami HEAT vs. Indiana Pacers – April 11
Friday’s game between the HEAT and the Pacers is a huge game. It could very well decide who locks up the No. 1 seed in the East. Everyone’s favorite NBA Champion Jayhawk, Mario Chalmers, has had a great April so far. He’s scored double digits in points in five of his last six games and dished out four or more assists in four of those games.
3) Phoenix Suns vs. Sacramento Kings – April 16
Ben McLemore and the Morrii. What else could you ask for? The Suns could be playing for their NBA playoff lives in this last game of the year. McLemore had one of his better games lately with 16 points vs. Thomas Robinson and the Trailblazers last night, scoring 16 points. I think the Kings would enjoy McLemore ending the season on a high note to give him some momentum into the offseason.
Speaking of TRob, Robinson had 8 points and 9 rebounds in that game last night. Portland is a team that could do some damage in the playoffs with a Jayhawk on their roster.
