Wiggins impresses in first game as a Cavalier
Friday night was Andrew Wiggins’ first game as a Cleveland Cavalier. And who knows, it could be his last.
If first impressions are everything, Cavs fans have to be happy with their most recent No. 1 pick. Wiggins finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-for-18 shooting (3-for-6 from the free throw line) in 31 minutes.
“It feels great,” Wiggins said about getting the first game under his belt. “The chemistry is already building with this team. We shared the ball and we made plays on big possessions.”
Wiggins had 11 points in the first half and he showed off his athleticism and skills. His first field goal attempt was a 15-foot jumper, which he made.
He then proceeded to air ball his next attempt, which was a three-pointer. Outside of that, Wiggins looked great in the first half.
Wiggins had a couple of outstanding moves, including a dunk in the first half and a blocked shot on Jabari Parker that led to an “and-one.”
Perhaps Wiggins’ most impressive play occurred with 2 minutes left in the first half. Wiggins received the ball outside the three-point line, pump-faking a three-pointer, driving to the hoop and then stepping back for a jumper at the top of the key.
“That’s a big part of my game,” Wiggins said about making athletic plays. “It’s always good to give the fans what they want.”
Wiggins scored seven points in the third quarter and was held scoreless in the fourth.
“He’s got so much potential,” said Cleveland Cavs’ owner Dan Gilbert during the fourth quarter. “[Our scouts] think the sky is the limit for him. He’s still a teenager. He’s a great kid and he’s working hard. He wants it badly.”
Gilbert was ecstatic after the Cavs had one of the biggest days in the history of their organization as they landed LeBron James. Wiggins was excited, too.
“Oh yeah,” Wiggins said when asked if he was thrilled to add King James to their roster.
“It’s a big day,” said Wiggins. “We got the best player in basketball coming to our team. It’ll be a great learning experience.”
Asked if he had spoke to LeBron James today, Wiggins said no.
“He’s probably really busy,” Wiggins said with a smile.
Wiggins said the team has already had a boost with the acquisition of the King.
“You can feel it,” said Wiggins about the added energy. “He’s back home. He’s going to make a big difference.”
