It is expected that next week Andrew Wiggins will become a Minnesota Timberwolf in a blockbuster deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
While the trade isn’t official, it hasn’t stopped Bill Self and others to talk about the deal. On Thursday, Kobe Bryant reportedly became the next big name to speak up about the deal.
“Cleveland is making the same mistake that Charlotte made with me,” Bryant was quoted by @2014MrBasket on Twitter.
If you didn’t already know, Kobe Bryant wasn’t drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers. He was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets and was traded to LA for Vlade Divac.
Considering Divac only played two seasons for the Hornets and Kobe Bryant will end up being one of the greatest Lakers and NBA players of all-time, I think it is obvious Charlotte made a mistake.
It’s hard to say if Cleveland is making the same mistake at this time. Kevin Love is one of the best power forwards in the game right now while Wiggins isn’t a proven commodity. If Cleveland can win a championship or two with LeBron and Love, it could be argued that the deal is worth it even if Wiggins turns into a perennial All Star.
Regardless, I bet Andrew Wiggins is loving the compliment from Kobe Bryant.
Consider the following: LeBron James is most likely pulling the strings in Cleveland and he’s sending Wiggins away. Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant, the only player in the NBA right now that is in the same conversation as LeBron in terms of personal accomplishments, is giving Wiggins high praise.
