Weis challenges fans to show up for Texas

Kansas has struggled to fill the seats of Memorial Stadium so far. With 36,574 in the crowd for the first game against SEMO and 34,822 last week vs. Central Michigan, Charlie Weis has become frustrated. Kansas had the worst record in the Big 12 last season and they were averaging 37,884 fans per game. KU is well below that this year.

Despite a 2-1 record, Kansas fans are having a hard time getting up for this football team for a couple of reasons: the record of the Jayhawks since Mangino started and the result vs. Duke in the second game of the season.

However, Weis has offered a challenge to fans: “Give us from 3 to 6:30.”

Weis is of course talking about how the game will go from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. After that, go out and have fun in Lawrence.

Here’s the full quote: ” Now, would I have liked 15,000 more? You betcha, okay. I like the place filled every single game. But let’s look at it; we’re 2-1, okay, it’s not been pretty, but we’re 2-1, it’s homecoming, Texas is rolling into town, Saturday afternoon, it’s going to be 80 degrees and sunny, and it’s 3 p.m. There’s no excuse. You’ve got plenty of time Saturday night. By 6:30 they’re free, okay, just come give us from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., that’s all. Three and a half hours. That’s it.”

Charlie Weis has a point. Despite being 14.5 point underdogs, KU has a shot at beating Texas for the first time in a long while. It’s going to be a nice day and it is Homecoming.

If you’re in Lawrence and you care about KU’s football program failing, you should be at this game.

If Kansas can beat Texas behind a good crowd, they’ll be at 3-1 with a lot of positive momentum heading into West Virginia.
