ITP: KU’s Season Ends – How Should 2014-2015 Be Remembered?

An up-and-down season with mostly downs recently has come to a close for the Kansas Jayhawks, who fell in the Round of 32 for the second year in a row. The culprit was the Wichita State Shockers; it blew Kansas out of the water to eliminate it from the NCAA tournament after a 27-9 season.

On the same day that Inside the Paint would re-claim the #1 ranking in college sports podcasts, the Kansas Jayhawks’ season ended in Omaha. We really can’t just have it all.

Daniel Cunningham’s prophecy of KU losing in the second (expletive) round for the second year in a row came true. Wichita State blasted the Jayhawks away in the second half by shooting a scorching 64% from the floor. It scored 49 points and buried KU, leaving Kansas out of the Sweet 16 for the second year in a row. Aside from the two point guards and a lot of Perry Ellis free throws, there wasn’t anything positive to take away from the game. As Fred VanVleet summed it up: “(Kelly Oubre) is supposed to be a lottery pick, and we have Zach Brown just outworking him.”

The Jayhawks were shredded by 32 points in the season’s second game, and then lost by 25 just 34 days later. Bill Self then nagivated the team through a murderous conference slate to an 11th straight Big 12 title. However, once again, the season ended by KU bowing out in the “third round” of the NCAA tournament. Do you consider this to be one of Self’s best coaching jobs, thinking that he managed to put a band-aid over what was a weaker team, or do you look back on this and think he didn’t coach well this year? For us, it’s a mixed reaction, and we all elaborate on why.

The basketball season may be over for the Crimson and Blue, but Rock Chalk Blog is only starting to heat up. In the coming days, we’re going to be reviewing this 2014-15 season from the perspectives of several people as the focus shifts to the offseason. Daniel, Rock Chalk Blog’s Recruiting Guru, will be writing up KU recruits and possible commits, while Ryan and Josh transition into getting prepared to cover their first football seasons as RCB owners.

…Only 206 days until Late Night, right?
