Andrew Wiggins, the No. 1 recruit in the country and arguably the greatest high school prosepect since LeBron James, chose to wear the Crimson and Blue next season Tuesday afternoon.

Wiggins’ announcement came in a small gym in Huntington, West Virginia, in front of a small crowd and barely any media members.

The only newspaper reporter, Grant Traylor, tweeted out the announcement that was heard across the United States:

Wiggins, a 6-8 forward from Huntington Prep, averaged 23.4 points and 11.2 rebounds. Wiggins’ comes from a family of athletes. His father, Mitchell Wiggins, is a former NBA player and his mother, Marita Payne-Wiggins, is a former Olympian track athlete.

Wiggins’ parents both went to Florida State and everyone considered Kentucky the favorite because of John Calipari. Somehow, Kansas was able to land Wiggins.

Self was pleased to find out Wiggins picked Kansas:

“Obviously, everyone in Jayhawk-land is overwhelmed and excited today,” Self said. “This was a pleasant surprise because we never had an idea which way he was leading. Andrew did this the exact way he said he was going to. He played his cards very close to his vest as did his mother and father. I knew we were one of four. The competition was very stiff and we were fortunate that we were able to ink him today. He’s a tremendous talent and a terrific kid. Probably an even better kid than he is a talent. We think he has a chance to be about as good a prospect as we’ve ever had.

“He brings athleticism, length, scoring ability and he’s also an assassin, an alpha dog and we definitely need that when you have a whole bunch of young kids,” Self said. “I think he’s going to be not just a good player, but have the chance to be a great one. I know the people that support our program are going to be pleasantly surprised when they see him run and play the very first time he gets the opportunity.”

Wiggins solidifies the best recruiting class Bill Self has ever had. The rest of the class is so good that it was arguably his best class before Wiggins signed. Now, Bill Self has his first ever No. 1 recruit ever and looks to win the Big 12 for the tenth year in a row.

Wiggins is projected to be Bill Self’s fourth one-and-done player at Kansas, joining Josh Selby, Xavier Henry and Ben McLemore.

Wiggins joins the following as the class of 2013 in Lawrence:

  • Wayne Selden – Small Forward – No. 12 Rivals / No. 14 ESPNU
  • Joel Embiid – Center – No. 25 Rivals / No. 6 ESPNU
  • Conner Frankamp – Point Guard – No. 34 Rivals / No. 46 ESPNU
  • Brannen Greene – Small Forward – No. 29 Rivals / No. 47 ESPNU
  • Frank Mason – Point Guard – No. 76 Rivals / Unranked on ESPNU

Kansas fans will certainly have a lot to look forward to in the 2013-2014 season. With Wiggins, they’re most certainly a top-10 team, a Final Four and National Championship contender.
