North
1. Kansas (1) – Kansas played well yet again. Unfortunately for Mangino, they keep leaving points on the field. Some bad drops today (which Mangino indicated was lack of focus all week). If you take out the opening drive for Duke (2 plays, 87 yards, one touchdown) and substitute Duke kicking a field goal to begin the 4th quarter instead of getting a TD on a 4th and goal, you’re looking at a 44-6 win. Those two drives were pretty uncharacteristic compared to the rest of the game, especially the first drive. Overall, the defense was amazing. Five sacks and two interceptions (one for a touchdown) speaks for itself. Jake Sharp was hurt, so that decreased the effectiveness of the running game as Toben Oporum had to handle all the load.
2. Nebraska (2) – I watched most of the second half and what I saw was awful. The defense is great, no doubt about it, but the offense made a lot of mistakes. They lost a very winnable game. Lots of penalties cost Nebraska in the red zone in the middle of the fourth quarter which made the difference. Nebraska had a shot at making a statement… They failed.
3. Missouri (3) – Beat Furman… Not exactly impressive, but a win is a win.
4. Iowa State (4) – Got a win this week.
5. Colorado (T-5) – Got a win today… They’re on their way to 10 wins now.
6. Kansas State (T-5) – Lost to a very mediocre UCLA team on the road.
South
1. Texas (1) – Got their “revenge” for Texas Tech ruining their championship hopes last year.
2. Oklahoma (2) -Won big over Idaho State. Landry Jones came out with a big game. Maybe they won’t be in such bad shape if they can get Bradford back before the Red River Shootout.
3. Oklahoma State (3) – Won…but not in an impressive fashion. Despite winning 41-24, the Owls more total offense yards.
4. Texas A&M (5) – Got the win today to move to 2-0. If I told you that four teams in the Big 12 had zero losses, would you guess A&M? A&M gave up 30 points, which is far from their first game’s performance.
5. Texas Tech (4) – Loss to Texas on the road. Not exactly a awful loss, but there isn’t many positives to take out of the game other than that they stayed within 10 points of Texas.
6. Baylor (6) – Lost to UConn at home. Not good for the Bears.
