What to take from Tuesday night:
1) This team is athletic, strong, and deep. Self played nine players in his rotation last night, which will be similar to the rotation for the rest of the season. Normally, Self plays everyone but since Brady Morningstar is suspended (DWI), Chase Buford didn’t play (most likely because of his DWI), C.J. Henry has been banged up, and Mario Little and Travis Releford will most likely red-shirt and probably won’t play in the next exhibition, either.
2) Kansas can throw a bunch of different looks at teams. The likely starting lineup (last night Taylor sat because he hadn’t done well in practice lately) is:
PG: Taylor
SG: Collins
SF: X. Henry
PF: Markieff Morris
C: Aldrich
However, Kansas can throw their ‘big’ lineup out there and play:
PG: 6’3 Taylor
SG: 6’6 X
SF: 6’8 Mc Morris
PF: 6’9 Mk Morris
C: 6’11 Aldrich
Not many teams can match up with the height and strength of that line-up. We will probably see Sherron Collins in at PG in this type of line-up, as well.
3) The Morris twins have improved, they’re much more “explosive” and stronger. They missed too many lay-ups, however. However, it’s very noticeable that they’re better rebounders and learned to use their strength better. Brady McCollough noted that they still make stupid fouls (pushes in the back).
4) Elijah Johnson can jump…really high. He made a few ridicolously athletic moves which will excite Kansas fans for a while. He will contribute off the bench, Self doesn’t see him red-shirting. Johnson does need to work on getting under control, which Self said Tyshawn Taylor had problems with last year. He brings athleticism and energy off the bench. He makes every thing look so easy. Which coincides with point 5…
5) The freshman class of Xavier Henry, Thomas Robinson and Elijah Johnson might be the most athletic freshman class in the history of Kansas. X and TRob look like men among little boys with their pure strength and Johnson might be the most athletic player since Julian Wright played for Kansas.
This was my favorite play of the game…Xavier steals the ball with his arm span, feeds it out and leads to an alley-oop that even got the Williams Fund boosters off their feet. The play starts at 1:39.
After this play, Thomas Robinson had a monster block. Even though he fouled out, he impressed me greatly. You’re going to love watching him play.
