What to Watch for: Toledo
The holidays are coming to a close and that means its time for KU basketball to get back in action. KU fans also hope that it is time for this Bill Self coached squad to make the infamous Christmas leap in performance. You can check out my most recent blog post in regards to that. For now, here are some things to waych for as the Jayhawks face Toledo.
#282. That is Toledo’s strength of schedule ranking. They have played a truly laughable schedule to this point so while they sit at 11-0 with some offensive statistics ranking in the top 25, that context is important. Similar to Georgetown, Toledo will find out how good they actually are when they venture into Allen.
How many points can the Jayhawks score? One place where Toledo really struggles, especially given the competition they have faced, is their defense. They rank 246th in points allowed, 281st defensive assists 294th in defensive field goal percentage, 184th in defensive rebounding and 263rd in blocks per game. With KU coming off the break and playing at home for only the second time in over a month, they may be poised for a big night offensively. Toledo will almost certainly try to zone them to slow that down. I don’t think the Jayhawks have the outside shooters to regularly threaten 100 points, but this matchup against Toledo may be their last good chance of the year to eclipse the century mark.
Black to Black? We were all impressed and relieved to see Tarik Black step up for Perry and play the game of his young Jayhawk career. It will be interesting to see if he has shaken his early season woes altogether or if he will have some more ups and downs yet. According to Self, he practices like he played against Georgetown. If KU can finally get that Tarik for a good 12-15 minutes per game they are in much better shape going forward. Toledo should be a good follow up game for Mr. Black to build more confidence.
