Quick Hitters: Oklahoma State (Round Two)
The Kansas Jayhawks dropped their seventh loss of the season last night as they lost to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 72-65, in Stillwater. Let’s take a look at why the Jayhawks weren’t able to put this one away:
1. Stopping Forte: Stopping Phil Forte is usually a recipe for shutting this Oklahoma State team down, but that was not the case last night. Wayne Selden played remarkable defense and was able to shut Forte down from outside as he finished with just two points, off of zero-of-four shooting from behind the arc. While this stopping Forte was definitely one of the keys to a Kansas win, it wasn’t enough to outweigh Kansas’ 22 turnovers which ultimately cost them the game.
2. Defensive Rebounding: Last night Kansas dominated the glass like they’ve done all season, out rebounding OSU 42-24. While Kansas had 6 more defensive boards than the Cowboys, the major margin of victory came from the offensive side of the ball. The Jayhawks snagged 15 offensive boards as opposed to Oklahoma State’s 3. With these numbers alone, Kansas should have been able to pull out the win in Stillwater, but they gave up a lot of these offensive possessions by turning the ball over which allowed Oklahoma State to keep the game closer than it should have been.
3. Backflip? Unfortunately, Kansas didn’t have the opportunity to do a backflip because they lost the game and the Oklahoma State fans stormed the court. However, Marcus Smart did have a few flopping incidents and a couple of muscle flexes to once again, prove that he’s one of the cockiest players in the game this season. I don’t know about you all, but I’m overly-annoyed with his on the court antics this season. There’s a good chance that Kansas will see another Oklahoma State matchup in the Big 12 tournament, so unfortunately the fans might have to deal with Smart’s immaturity for another 40 minutes this season. That matchup might even come as early as KU’s second game in the Big 12 tournament. We’re actually giving away tickets to that game, too.
