No sting in exhibition win: Jayhawks beat Hornets, 104-62

The No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks ended its second and final exhibition game of the 2016-17 season with a 104-62 win over the Emporia State Hornets.

Frank Mason led the Jayhawks in scoring with 17 points, adding five assists and three rebounds. Across the board, the offense for KU was fantastic. The game was tied at 11 early, but after Mason returned to the court the Jayhawks were unstoppable, ending the first half on a 44-18 run and with six players scoring in double digits by the end of the game.

Kansas did much better rebounding after the previous game against Washburn, when Mason was KU’s leading rebounder. It was against a small Emporia State team, but Kansas worked hard and made more of an effort on the glass, making it a priority in this game.

Even though tonight was an improvement for KU, the Jayhawks will likely struggle to rebound when Landen Lucas is on the bench. Udoka Azubuike spent time in foul trouble in both games and Carlton Bragg will continue to have problems with bigger players that plagued him last season.

While size has shown to be a problem for Kansas these two games, the team has excelled in transition. Almost a fifth of KU’s points (20) came on the fast break.

Svi Mykhailiuk continued his hot shooting, going 5/9 from three and finishing with 16 points. If he continues this play, the Jayhawks will have some deadly three-point shooting coming from Svi, Mason and Graham.

Carlton Bragg had a poor game, only scoring two points with two assists and four rebounds, while committing five turnovers and five fouls. Kansas has shown a willingness to run the four-guard lineup so far this season, and with Bragg’s recent play, they might have to use it a lot early in the season until he returns to form.
