Re-Calling Charlie Weis, David Beaty’s Buyout Clause, and Feasible Coaching Options in 2017

A lot of awesome things happened in 2014: Sharknado 2 aired, the Royals ended their playoff drought, and… the Kansas Jayhawks fired Charlie Weis. It was the end of an error for sure. What some fans don’t know is… the Jayhawks are STILL paying Weis over $200,000 a month just to not be the head coach anymore. Crazy, right?

For those of you who aren’t up-to-date on Kansas football, and, let’s face it, after 2007, you probably stopped watching… Charlie Weis won just five of the 27 games he coached, and he was booted from the program in the middle of the 2014 season. Weis was also owed money from the Notre Dame program, and, legend has it that once that $2.1 million check came in, he and his wife celebrated with a Coors Light.

Weis was never the nicest guy. During 2013 Big 12 Media Day, he said, “Everyone wants to play. There’s no one that wants to not play. I said, have you looked at that pile of crap out there? Have you taken a look at that? So if you don’t think you can play here, where do you think you can play? It’s a pretty simple approach. And that’s not a sales pitch. That’s practical. You’ve seen it, right? Unfortunately, so have I.”

His excuse for being so blunt about this college team that he was coaching? Well, Weis surmises that sarcasm is just part of who he is.

After Weis was fired in late-September, interim head coach Clint Bowen took over, and guided the Jayhawks to a 1-7 record for the rest of the season. Fast forward and things have not gotten any better under David Beaty. In his nearly two years in Lawrence, Beaty has just one win, and that win came against FCS opponent Rhode Island to open the 2016 season.

There is some good news to report for KU football fans: Charlie Weis is done collecting checks from the University of Kansas after 2016, thus, freeing up space to hire a REAL head coach… Or at least some more pieces that could make watching a KU football game less dreadful.

David Beaty, bless his heart, may not even be going anywhere at the end of the season. But with that kind of money being freed up, and $200,000 a month isn’t a small amount, think of the possibilities. Of course, buying a championship only works in professional sports, and even then, it’s hit-or-miss. The mere thought of hiring a successful coach and having two top-of-the-line programs at KU is cringeworthy to anyone outside of the Sunflower State. Let’s not forget: Beaty does have a buyout clause. Basically, it says that if there are over two years left on his contract, the school is legally obligated to pay him for the next 24 months, upon the date of his written resignation. If there’s any less than time than that, Kansas just pays him whatever money he is owed.

Who would even think about coming to a program as atrocious as KU’s? Glad you asked. Campus Insiders listed both Jim Mora and Mark Stoops as coaches on the hot seat, as well a Charlie Strong and Brian Kelly. Any KU fan who has watched one game during the David Beaty era is probably thinking, “Hell yeah! Any of those coaches would be awesome!” Beaty’s conservative approach usually kicks KU in the butt, and a coach with some fire, passion, and moxie might just be what this program needs. Of course, Les Miles, who is currently not coaching, but might be kind of a longshot for KU. He would be a great option, but realistically, it’s probably not feasible.

You won’t turn a program like KU around in a year. There will be a growing process, and it will probably still be painful to watch every Saturday for the next few years, but if KU handles these next few years correctly, and spends their money where they should, the football program in Lawrence will be headed down the right direction in no time.
