Game 27: No. 12 Kansas at No. 14 Texas Tech – Preview and Prediction

The Kansas Jayhawks blew out West Virginia last week to stay right in the mix of the Big 12 title race. Let’s take a look at the current Big 12 standings: Kansas State is in sole possession of first place at 10-3, Kansas is tied for second with Texas Tech at 9-4, and at 8-5 are Iowa State and Baylor, tied for fourth. Those are the teams in contention at this point. As you can see, this game between Kansas and Texas Tech has massive implications for the conference title chase.

  • 364 days ago, Kansas played Texas Tech in a game with very similar implications as today’s game in Lubbock. Devonte Graham had 26 points in that game and made what was quite possibly the craziest layup of the Bill Self era.
  • In their previous meeting, Kansas ran away with a 79-63 victory in Allen Fieldhouse. Dedric Lawson led the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
  • All time, Kansas is 35-5 against Texas Tech, including 17-1 against the Red Raiders since 2009.
  • In his last five games Devon Dotson has averaged 18.2 points per game, 5.2 assists per game, and 4.8 rebounds per game. In short, he’s been fantastic.
About the Red Raiders

Texas Tech has been flat-out fantastic in their last four games since losing to Kansas. They’ve won all four games, averaging 77.7 points per contest by and posting an average margin of victory of 24 points. On the season, Texas Tech is 21-5 overall and 9-4 in the Big 12. With a win, the Red Raiders would be in great position to take home at least a share of the Big 12 title. If Texas Tech really has found a way to score consistently, Kansas will have their hands full today.

Jarrett Culver – Sophomore, Guard, 6’6″
Culver leads his team in points 17.7 points per game, rebounds with 6.3 per game, free throws made (95) and attempted (139), minutes played (31.1 per game), and assists with 3.7 per game. Jarrett Culver will probably end up being a lottery pick in the next NBA draft. He is everything for Texas Tech. Yes, Matt Mooney and Davide Moretti are averaging over 10 points and are keys pieces on this team but without Jarrett Culver, Texas Tech wouldn’t even be in the tournament discussion.

Prediction

Kansas 74 – Texas Tech 69

This is going be another instant classic. Kansas has won this game for the last 14 years and I think they will win it again. I think Texas Tech will lead most of the way until Kansas wills themselves to a victory in the last three or four minutes.

Dedric Lawson will have a big day. Hopefully Marcus Garrett will be able to play a healthy number of minutes as he returns from injury. Devon Dotson is the key to this game. If he plays well, Kansas wins this game, but if he turns it over and looks like a freshmen, “The Streak” may be on life support. I think he’s going to be great.
