Game 34: (5) Iowa State vs. (3) Kansas – Preview and Prediction

The Jayhawks are coming off a 14-point victory against West Virginia yesterday to advance to the Big 12 Title game. Their next opponent: the Iowa State Cyclones. If Kansas wins this game, they very well could get the three seed in the Midwest Region, therefore having a chance to play in the Sprint Center two weeks from now in the Sweet 16 and, hopefully, Elite Eight.

These two teams have combined to win, after this year, seven straight tournament titles. It’s a clash of the two Big 12 tournament titans going head-to-head for the crown with NCAA tournament seeding on the line. It’s going to be a heck of a game.

  • Iowa State and Kansas meet in the Big 12 Title game for the first time since 2015, when Iowa State secured a 70-66 comeback victory.
  • These teams have won the last six Big 12 Tournament titles combined. Kansas won in 2013, 2016, and 2018, while Iowa State won in 2014, 2015, and 2017.
  • Kansas has won five straight Big 12 tournament games, with their last loss coming in 2017 against TCU. Kansas has lost its last two games against Iowa State in the Big 12 tournament, however.
About the Cyclones

KU has played the Cyclones twice already this season. They are no longer a mystery. Iowa State blew the doors off Kansas in Ames, and KU won a great game in Lawrence. These are the two most talented teams in the Big 12, and I’m always game for Iowa State and KU. It’s the best Rivalry in the Big 12.

Cyclones to Watch

Lindell Wigginton – Sophomore, Guard, 6’2″

Playing well following an injury-plagued start to the season, Wigginton is one of the most explosive players in the Big 12. It seemed like he was going to leave for the NBA after last season, but opted to return to school after a trip to the NBA combine.

Wigginton is very athletic and an excellent shooter. Devon Dotson and Marcus Garrett will probably take turns guarding him throughout the game. It’s a tough assignment, as Wigginton is the type of player that can give you a lot of trouble.

Marial Shayok – Senior, Guard, 6’6″

Shayok has had an impressive season, averaging 18.6 points, and five rebounds per game. He doesn’t have as much flash in his game as Wigginton, but his stats are still impressive. Shayok is shooting 50% from the floor, 40% from three, and 88% from the line. He is an excellent finisher at the rim that dominated Kansas in all phases back on January 5.

Prediction

Kansas 77 – Iowa State 73

It’s hard not to get excited for an Iowa State-Kansas Big 12 Title game. I think it will be a great game. Hopefully Quentin Grimes can stay hot, but I think this is a game where the Jayhawks will lean on their two best players: Dedric Lawson and Devon Dotson. If those guys have good games, Kansas will win the Big 12 Tournament.
