A Tale of Two Halves: Kansas Rallies Past Oregon State
The start wasn’t pretty, but the ending certainly was.
After scoring just 28 points in the first half, Kansas exploded past Oregon State in the first half by scoring 54 after intermission. The Jayhawks cruised to their seventh straight win, defeating the Beavers by a final score of 82-67 at the Sprint Center on Saturday night.
In the first 10 minutes, KU had more turnovers (four) than made shots (three). A slow start made an upset, or at least a tight finish, seem likely. The Jayhawks fell behind by as many as 14 points late in the first half, which was their largest deficit of the season. Kansas shot 38% in the first half and watched as Oregon State made its first seven three-point attempts.
Hunter Mickelson, who got his second straight start, was the Jayhawks’ best player early. For some reason, despite making a big impact in the first five minutes, he was benched by Bill Self for the last 15 minutes of the half. Landen Lucas, Cheick Diallo, and Jamari Traylor all took turns trying to stop a balanced Oregon State scoring attack, but none of them had any luck. Offensively, lob plays were the only thing working for Kansas, as three of its first four shots made from the field came on alley-oops.
Tres Tinkle went insane from three in the first half, going 5-for-5 from three for 15 points. At the break, the Jayhawks trailed, 39-28. They needed to make some big adjustments to win this game, and they did exactly that.
Kansas made a run to tie the game at 48 when Wayne Selden hit a three with 14:57 left in the game. It took just over five minutes for KU to erase the 11-point halftime hole. Following an OSU timeout, Perry Ellis went on a personal 5-0 run to give Kansas the lead. The Jayhawks never looked back, cruising to a 82-67 win.
Carlton Bragg and Mickelson held the Beavers’ inside offense down for the entire second half. Neither Lucas nor Diallo played after halftime. Neither did Traylor. By the time the Jayhawks’ interior defense finally settled in, the Beavers couldn’t buy a three-point basket, going 1-for-6 on threes in the second half.
The Jayhawks scored 28 points in the entire first half. They needed just eight minutes in the second half to surpass that point total.
This was a nice comeback after a slow, sloppy start. It was nice to see this team be resilient after nothing was going its way early.
Notes:
- Kansas is now 8-1, and it has won seven games in a row.
- Selden: game-high 22 points on 8/12 from the floor. He went 5/8 from three, which has me wondering whether Selden or Brannen Greene is the best three point shooter on the Jayhawks. (I’m only halfway kidding.)
- Wayne Selden has already made 30 three-point baskets this year. He made 46 all of last season.
- Mason: 18 points (5/8 FG), six assists, three steals. 8/12 from the free-throw line. He played 38 minutes.
- Ellis: 13 points (4/10 FG) and a team-high nine rebounds.
- Graham: 10 points (4/8 FG), five assists, three steals, and zero turnovers. He also played terrific defense on the Beavers’ best player, holding Gary Payton II to just 5/11 from the floor.
- Mickelson: seven points (3/5 FG) in just 14 minutes. He was far-and-away the best big in the first half, despite playing a shockingly low number of minutes.
- Bragg: eight points (4/6 FG), four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 13 minutes. He’s coming along very nicely so far.
- Diallo: two points (1/2 FG), two rebounds and a block in seven minutes.
- Traylor: nothing in two minutes. Two. That’s the fewest he’s played since his freshman year.
- Kansas continued doing a great job sharing the ball, combining total of 17 assists on 30 field goals.
- Gary Payton II had a monster dunk over Diallo.
- Selden’s hopstep before his jumper… he showed it off a few times during this game. It was super pretty.
- Frank Mason: still one of the best point guards in the country. He has at least 10 points and two assists in all nine games this season.
- Selden and Graham could both make Big 12 All-Defense teams.
- This Kansas team is fun to watch. Last year’s team was not. Only two guys left and two main rotation guys were added this year, too. Play style and new Wayne Selden are pretty much the only changes.
- Up next: Montana in a week, next Saturday, at Allen Fieldhouse. It’s “Ugly Sweater Day.”
