Rock Chalk Blog Top 25 Poll for December 28, 2015

Though the Christmas week of college basketball was quieter than recent weeks, there were still a handful of ranked teams that went down. All of this madness will certainly tear up the AP Top 25 poll, but more importantly, how will it impact the Rock Chalk Blog Top 25 poll?

Ryan Landreth’s ballot for December 28, 2015:

1. Michigan State (last week: 1)
2. Kansas (2)
3. Oklahoma (3)

The Spartans needed overtime to survive a feisty Oakland team, but Kansas and Oklahoma both triumphed in more difficult settings. There’s a pretty big gap separating the country’s top three teams and everyone else at this point.

4. Virginia (4)
5. North Carolina (5)
6. Maryland (6)
7. Butler (7)
8. Arizona (8)
9. Xavier (9)
10. Providence (10)

For the first time since…I can remember doing these rankings, I didn’t make a single change in my top 10 this week. With multiple matchups between top 20 teams in the Big East this week, the top 10 will certainly be shaken up next Sunday.

11. Iowa State (12)
12. Miami (13)
13. SMU (14)
14. Kentucky (16)
15. Purdue (15)

Iowa State, Miami, and SMU slide up after managing pre-Christmas victories, but Kentucky’s tough win over Louisville brings the Wildcats back into the top 15.

16. Villanova (17)
17. Louisville (11)
18. Texas A&M (18)
19. West Virginia (19)
20. Duke (20)

I was really disappointed with the Cardinals this week. On paper, I thought that Louisville could handle Kentucky, but it completely laid an egg at Rupp Arena on Saturday. I know that the Cardinals made a nice rally and had a chance to win at the end, but they were completely out-matched and out-played all afternoon. It was a very disappointing performance from a team that I thought was better than Kentucky entering the day.

21. Utah (NR)
22. South Carolina (24)
23. Colorado (23)
24. Cincinnati (21)
25. Baylor (NR)

Utah enters the polls after I incorrectly left it off my ballot last week. I didn’t want to overreact to one win against an overrated team (Duke), but I was really impressed with the performance the Utes showed this week. They are a legit top 25 team.

As far as Colorado, I’m giving the Buffaloes a pass for the close loss to the SMU Mustangs, who I think will end the year as a top 10 team. Colorado continues to be really good and has as good of a chance as anybody to win the Pac 12.

Dropped out:
George Washington (22)
UConn (25)

Where did I get it right, and where did I get it wrong? Let me know on Twitter.
