Monday Notebook: Blowouts, Recruits, and the Border War’s Return

It was a week of highs and lows for Kansas athletics.

1. WHAT WAS THAT!!?!!?!

45-0 loss to Iowa State on Saturday. See ya later, Coach Beaty. That was such a sloppy game. The defense was actually good at times only to have the offense let them down time and time again. I don’t even know what else to say about to this team. There’s so very little good. I don’t know what analysis to give or opinion to present. New coaches (again), new players (as always), new athletic director. Those would help I guess. That’s all I have.

I realize that this is very pessimistic and sounds kind of hopeless. But you know what, it kind of is. That was one of the single worst losses of the Beaty era. It’s embarrassing for the players, the school, and the fans. I won’t be writing a preview of the Kansas-TCU game (which is in primetime on Fox??? What???) for next week, but I will give you a prediction: TCU wins 77-16. There’s no reason it will be closer than that.

2. THE BORDER WAR IS BACK!!!! (ish)

Yes, I love to use caps and multiple exclamations. Anyway, this is so awesome. KU and Mizzou duking it out on the hardwood after a five year hiatus. But wait! There’s more! All of the proceeds will go to hurricane relief. Well done, guys. It’ll be fun to see Micheal and Jontay Porter go at it against Devonte’ Graham and Malik Newman. While this game is officially an exhibition, it will be the most intense exhibition of all time. At least for the fans. The game is being played at the Sprint Center and it’s going to be lit. The game will only be on local radio and won’t be on tv or streamed anywhere on any platform. Each school will allotted 9,000 tickets for their donor fund members and students. Any remaining tickets will go on sale Wednesday at 10 am at SprintCenter.com. I will be on my computer at 9:30. Prediction: KU wins 83-71.

3. Kansas lands 5-star Point Guard Devon Dotson

Huuuuuge pick up for the ‘Hawks. This guy (along with Charlie Moore) will replace Devonte’ Graham, and maybe Malik Newman depending on the type of performance he has this season. Dotson is great driving the basket and is a natural point guard. I would expect him to start unless KU also picks up 5-star combo guard Quinten Grimes.

Another recruit Kansas is targeting is Zion Williamson. This is shaping up to be one of the best Bill Self recruiting classes ever – including the Wiggins, Embiid, Selden, Mason year. Kansas already has a preseason top three team for 2018-19 but adding Grimes or Williamson would make us #1 I think. Should be fun to watch. So many really good players on that 2018-19 team.

4. KU Volleyball looking good

The Lady Hawks volleyball has a 16-3 record including winning streaks of six and nine games. They should be well on there way to another NCAA Tournament birth and hopefully another Big 12 title. Good luck girls!
