Brett Bochy makes major league debut, history
Brett Bochy, who pitched at the University of Kansas from 2008 to 2010, made his major league debut on Saturday night for the San Francisco Giants.
Brett Bochy’s father, Bruce, is the manager of the Giants and it set up for a major league first. With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Bruce Bochy made a pitching change and handed the ball to his son. It was the first time in major league history a managing father was able to make a pitching change, his son.
There have been seven other father-son/manager-player situations in Major League Baseball history. The most famous combo is Cal Ripken, Jr. and Cal Ripken, Sr.
Brett Bochy walked his first batter to give the Dodgers a 15-0 lead. Bochy then got his next batter out with a pop fly to end the inning. In the seventh inning, Brett Bochy gave up a two-run home run. Bochy finished the night pitching 1 and 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs, one hit, one walk and one strikeout. His lone strikeout? Yasiel Puig.
Bochy was drafted in 2010 and had a long road to the major leagues after having Tommy John surgery.
At KU, Bochy had a perfect 7-0 record in 77 innings pitched, allowing 31 earned runs (3.62 ERA) while striking out 106 batters.
